If it’s yellow, let it mellow!

Growing up in a middle class household, I always remember being yelled at for not flushing the toilet after every bathroom visit. Fast forward to today and I have a strict policy of not flushing if there is simply urine in the potty. Saves water, save money on water bills. If I lived out in the country and when I visit friends who do not have a bathroom, but an outhouse; well, I just pee outside into the forest. Urine is basically harmless and not as germ-ridden and dangerous as the companies who try to sell you toilet bowl cleaners and deodorizers make it out to be. All those harsh chemicals get into the water supply and return to us via our drinking water; unless you use a good water filter.

Another thing you can do to save water is to put a brick or a small jug filled with water into your toilet tank. This will take up some space in your tank and less water will need to refill the tank every time you flush after doing your business. Or even better, get one of those new highly efficient toilets, which use very little water. Terry Love has some good recommendations on low-flow toilets.

I used to have a cat who was toilet trained. Mind you, he never flushed the toilet after doing his business, but it was funny to watch him get up on the seat without falling through! Now someone needs to teach this cat not to flush the toilet so darned much!
